Sherrie Wang

Assistant Professor, Mechanical Engineering & IDSS

Sherrie Wang is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Institute for Data, Systems, and Society (IDSS) at MIT, and a member of the Laboratory for Information and Decision Systems (LIDS). She is the Principal Investigator of the Earth Intelligence Lab at MIT, where the research focuses on using novel data sources and computational algorithms to monitor the planet and advance sustainable development. Her work emphasizes improving agricultural management and mitigating climate change, particularly in low- and middle-income regions. To achieve these goals, her lab frequently leverages satellite imagery, crowdsourced data, LiDAR, and other spatial datasets. Given the limited availability of ground truth data and the noisy nature of real-world data, her methodological research centers on developing machine learning techniques that can effectively operate under such constraints.

Prior to joining MIT, Sherrie Wang was a Ciriacy-Wantrup Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of California, Berkeley, hosted by Solomon Hsiang and the Global Policy Lab. She received her PhD in Computational and Mathematical Engineering from Stanford University in 2021, advised by David Lobell, and was affiliated with the Center on Food Security and the Environment and the Sustainability and AI Lab.
